Celebrating the 20 million milestone with Worldwide Fruit for National Apple Day
When collaboration proves very fruitful!
It’s National Apple Day! How we love a FRUIT-ful partnership here at Bread and Butter. And working with the Worldwide Fruit team is no exception as we surpass the magic 20 million milestone with over 20 million pieces of fruit donated from their surplus stock.
We joined forces in June 2021, on a joint mission to make sure that any Worldwide Fruit surplus produce is used to feed families in low-income communities. So far, the collaboration has redistributed over a juicy 954 tonnes of fruit including their iconic JAZZ™ apples, which also saves 2.4 million kg CO2. Amazing! The refreshing, tangy-sweet apples are always a welcome addition to the TBBT fruit and veg offering.
Hannah McIlfatrick, Commercial Director of Worldwide Fruit Ltd, said:
“We began the partnership with The Bread and Butter Thing in 2021 and we are delighted to be able to play a small part in helping local communities around the UK struggling with income. At Worldwide Fruit our site policy is Zero Waste, so we are always doing everything we can to make sure any surplus edible apples go back into the food chain.
Our very own Mark Game, CEO of The Bread and Butter Thing said:
“We know that at least half of our members struggled to access affordable fruit and veg before joining Bread and Butter. And now 75% eat fruit and veg on a regular basis thanks to partnerships like Worldwide Fruit. The JAZZ™ apples always go down a storm with our young families! It really does make a huge difference to what we’re trying to achieve.”
And this week, we’ll be doing our now-legendary orchard runs to Worldwide Fruits multiple orchard sites to collect over 250 containers of ‘wonky’ apples, fresh from the tree! This is our third year working with Worldwide Fruit to redistribute their orchard surplus all picked manually by their teams. Wow! This contributes to almost a third of their donations for the year!
